"Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely," a spokesperson for the Disney owned network stated without any further explanation.
Kimmel commented on the assassination of Kirk during his show earlier the week. "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it," the late night show host said.
US President Donald Trump, who has been placing pressure on broadcasters to stop airing content that he considered to be objectionable, has taken to social media to celebrate the news.
"Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done," Mr Trump said in a social media post.
Kimmel also commented on Mr Trumps mourning of Kirk as he pointed out a video that he did on the White House lawn. "This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish," Kimmel said.
Mr Trump has frequently credited Kirk for the drive of more young voters and voters of colour to support his successful 2024 presidential campaign. Kirk is also known for being the co-founder of Turning Point USA, an organisation dedicated to advancing conservative causes on college campuses.
ABC released their statement following an announcement from Nexstar Media Group. They said that they would stop airing the show on it's 32 ABC affiliates. "Mr Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse," the president of the broadcasting division of Nexstar said.
After Kimmel was taken off the air, a small protest formed outside the studio with a sign that said "Trump must go now".
