Tourists have been encouraged to enjoy a beer or two when visiting Spain, after beer consumption in the country fell by 16.1% since 2022.
The drop comes amid a wider decline in drinking outside the home, with Spain’s 2025 Food Consumption Report showing a 9.4% fall in consumption between 2022 and 2025.
Beer has been particularly affected. Per capita beer consumption outside the home fell to 18.4 litres in 2025, compared with 19.9 litres the previous year.
The decline is thought to be linked to lower disposable incomes among Spanish residents, as well as changing leisure habits.
Screen-based activities and a growing focus on health and wellness are also believed to be contributing to people drinking less.
Many businesses are responding to the changing habits by increasing their range of alcohol-free drinks, with demand for these products continuing to grow, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
Spain remains one of the world's most popular destinations for Irish holidaymakers, with millions of tourists visiting the country each year.
However, while tourists may be helping to keep Spain's bars and breweries busy, anyone drinking on holiday is being reminded to do so responsibly.
Drinkaware Ireland recommends keeping track of how much alcohol you are drinking, taking breaks between alcoholic drinks and making sure to eat and drink water. Always drink responsibly.
