George’s Dock Bridge in Dublin’s International Financial Services Centre is set to re-open a week earlier than planned, thanks to Midland Steel Group’s FasterFix solution. Designed to speed up installation on major infrastructure projects, FasterFix enabled the full bridge reinforcement to be completed in just one day.
The bridge had sustained extensive structural damage to its beams, abutments and rail systems following a fire earlier this year, requiring full demolition and replacement. The damage also disrupted normal operations on the Luas Red Line.
The rapid reconstruction highlights how modern methods of construction and advanced off-site rebar systems can deliver significant time savings on essential transport infrastructure projects. Midland Steel was brought into the project late, working in collaboration with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and GPX Rail.
Speaking to me about the impact of the FasterFix system, Midland Steel’s CCO Johnathan Jennings explained how the team achieved such a fast turnaround on the Luas project. “In simple terms, we provided the reinforced steel that goes into the bridges, and in this case the Luas line at George’s Dock. We do that in a modern off-site way, which saves a huge amount of time. It allows for the bridge to be accelerated in terms of its opening, by approximately a week in this case.”
He added that FasterFix can accelerate projects “typically by up to 75%, and we reduce the labour required on site by up to 80%.” Jennings also emphasised that the Irish-patented FasterFix system is becoming critical for delivering houses, bridges, data centres and other major infrastructure.
