Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas have reportedly been cast as the leading stars of the fifth season of hit crime drama True Detective, with the upcoming instalment set to take viewers to New York.
According to Variety, the Hollywood actors will headline the next chapter of the acclaimed HBO anthology series, which follows different detectives investigating complex and often disturbing criminal cases across the United States.

Cage will play a character named Henry Logan, while Banderas is set to portray Rai García. Further details about their roles and the mystery at the centre of the new season have yet to be revealed.

The fifth season will be set in Jamaica Bay, an area of New York City on the western end of Long Island. Filming is expected to begin in 2027, marking the next stage in the development of one of television's most celebrated crime dramas.

Issa López, who served as showrunner for the fourth season, will return to write, direct and executive produce the new instalment.

The casting brings together two established screen stars with extensive experience across a range of genres. Cage, known for films including Leaving Las Vegas and Face/Off, has built a reputation for his distinctive performances, while Banderas has appeared in numerous international hits, including The Mask of Zorro and Pain and Glory.

The announcement also raises expectations among fans hoping the new season will match the impact of the show's celebrated first instalment, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives investigating a series of disturbing murders in Louisiana.

The most recent season, released in 2024, featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as investigators working a mysterious case in Alaska. The series has maintained its anthology format throughout its run, introducing new characters, locations and investigations with each season.

Although the fifth season's casting and setting have reportedly been revealed, significant details remain under wraps. An official release date has not yet been announced, and the streaming platform for the upcoming episodes has also not been confirmed.

With production scheduled to get underway in 2027, the new season is still some way off. A release in 2028 could be possible, although no premiere window has been officially confirmed.

The pairing of Cage and Banderas is already an intriguing prospect for the series, with audiences now waiting to discover what mystery will bring their characters together in the next chapter of True Detective.
