Petrol stations are losing over 2.5 million euro a year due to customers driving off without paying.

The figure from the Irish Petrol Retailers Association, seen by the Sunday Business Post, works out at 2,500 euro per station.

The lobby group says because the issue receives a “limited response” from Gardaí, more people are taking “a chance” to see if they can get away with it.

The paper reports that in the UK, third party operators are employed to go after offenders by using their number plates. This has seen an 80% recovery in monies owed to the stations.
