PlayStation is set to end physical game discs entirely, confirming that all new titles released after January 2028 will be digital-only.
The move will mark a major shift for the gaming giant, with future PlayStation releases available exclusively as digital downloads via the PlayStation Store, effectively bringing the era of discs and cartridges to a close.

From that point onwards, players will only be able to purchase new PlayStation games in digital format through online platforms and selected retailers, as Sony moves fully away from physical production.
Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the decision reflects changing consumer habits across the industry.
He wrote in a blog post that the move comes in response to “shifting trends in consumer preference,” adding that physical disc production will be discontinued for all new PlayStation titles from January 2028.

He said: “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”
Sony has stressed that the change will not affect existing physical games or titles released before the cut-off date, meaning current disc-based libraries will remain fully playable.
The decision reflects a wider industry trend towards digital distribution, with more players opting to download games directly rather than purchasing physical copies in-store.
