The Cabinet sub-committee on COVID-19 along with senior Government Ministers will meet today to discuss the proposal of closing schools until the end of the month.
The three coalition leaders along with the Education, Health, Finance and Public Expenditure Ministers will attend.
Senior health officials will also be in attendance.
Yesterday 6,110 new cases of the virus were confirmed along with 6 further deaths.
This is the highest since the pandemic began.
The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said that the country “can’t cope” with the current levels of the disease and says it’s posing a risk to keeping schools open.
