Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has confirmed that her party will support a presidential candidate who possesses "a lot" of Irish, emphasizing the importance of the Irish language in the upcoming election.

Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, McDonald stated, "Tá a lán Gaeilge ag an duine," indicating that the chosen candidate is fluent in Irish. This statement narrows the potential candidates to Pearse Doherty, a native Irish speaker from Gweedore, County Donegal, and Independent TD Catherine Connolly, who is also a fluent Irish speaker.

McDonald described Sinn Féin's participation in the presidential election as a "game changer," aiming to offer an alternative to the traditional dominance of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. She emphasized the significance of having a president who embodies the values and ambitions of Ireland, stating, "We want to get Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil out of government, and we want to keep Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil out of the Áras." The party plans to make a formal announcement on Saturday regarding their candidate.

The Irish language holds a central place in Irish identity and culture. According to the 2022 census, approximately 39% of the population reported having some ability in Irish, though only about 1.7% use it daily outside the education system. Despite these figures, the language remains a vital symbol of national heritage and pride. Fluency in Irish is often seen as a reflection of a deep connection to Irish culture and history.

By backing a candidate with strong Irish language skills, Sinn Féin underscores its commitment to preserving the Irish language. This move also signals the party's dedication to representing the cultural values that resonate with a significant portion of the Irish populace.

As the election approaches, the focus on the Irish language is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse around national identity and cultural preservation.
