The suspect in a deadly attack near Berlin's Pride parade has been shot and killed by police.
Berlin police revealed in a statement on social media that officers located the suspect, 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, on Sunday evening.
"Around 6 p.m. (1600 GMT), the suspect involved in yesterday's attack in Tiergarten was located at an allotment garden complex in Spandau. According to initial findings, he ran towards officers while armed with a bladed weapon; police... subsequently opened fire. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by the Berlin Fire Department, he died at the scene," Berlin police wrote on X.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told broadcaster ZDF that a shot was fired and a person died.
The attack occurred at around 10pm on Saturday, in the Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate, and close to one of Europe's biggest annual LGBTQ celebrations, Christopher Street Day.
One person was killed and 29 injured, authorities confirmed.
Speaking to reporters, Dobrindt suggested that evidence pointed to it being an "Islamist terror attack," according to the BBC.
"We are dealing with a suspected perpetrator, who had previously drawn attention to himself through a high volume of criminal offences," Dobrindt continued.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the city's values of openness and diversity.
"This terrible act will not change who we are. Berlin remains a city of freedom and tolerance," Wegner said.
