A new rundown of the world’s most commercially successful festive films has highlighted just how dominant certain Christmas Movies classics remain at the global box office. From 90s favourites to modern animated hits, the list shows which titles continue to deliver huge returns every December.
First up is The Santa Clause (1994), which earned $190 million worldwide. The film stars Tim Allen, who accidentally finds himself stepping into Santa’s boots in this cosy 90s comedy that has since become a seasonal staple for many families.
Next is The Holiday (2006), grossing $205 million. The house-swap romance starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Cameron Diaz remains a go-to festive comfort watch, particularly popular across Ireland and the UK during the holiday season.
In eighth place is Elf (2003) with $230 million, led by Will Ferrell as Buddy — the human raised by elves who heads to New York in search of his real father. Its combination of slapstick humour and genuine heart has made it one of the most enduring Christmas comedies of the century.
British rom-com favourite Love Actually (2003) lands with $250 million globally. Written and directed by Richard Curtis, and featuring an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy and Andrew Lincoln, the film remains one of the most quoted festive titles across Ireland each December.
Next comes The Polar Express (2004), which reached $318 million. The animated adventure follows a young boy whose disbelief in Santa is challenged during a magical journey on the film’s titular train. Tom Hanks voices multiple roles, including the Conductor.
Just ahead of it is A Christmas Carol (2009) with $325 million, featuring Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins in an animated retelling of the Dickens classic. Carrey voices several characters in a version that pushed performance-capture technology at the time.
Another Carrey-led entry, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), clocks in at $347 million. His prosthetic-heavy turn as the Grinch remains iconic, though the film has been overshadowed in recent years by the animated remake further down this list.
Into the top three, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) stands strong with $359 million. The sequel follows Macaulay Culkin as Kevin once again, this time navigating Manhattan — complete with a memorable cameo from future US president Donald Trump.
In second place is the original Home Alone (1990), a true Christmas institution with an enormous $477 million global take. Culkin’s breakout role as a kid defending his home against burglars Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern remains wildly popular more than three decades later.
Taking the top spot is The Grinch (2018), now the highest-grossing Christmas movie ever with $539 million. The animated adaptation of Dr Seuss’s classic story features the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch and Rashida Jones, and enjoyed renewed success after gaining momentum during re-releases in 2020, boosting its already massive total.
