Lidl has officially begun construction of its first standalone public house in Northern Ireland, with the new venue expected to open to customers later this summer.

The pub, named The Middle Ale, is being developed next to the retailer’s Dundonald store in Co Down and will feature a dedicated off-sales area alongside a traditional hospitality offering.

The project follows a lengthy planning process and marks a significant expansion of Lidl’s presence in the local community. Construction is being carried out in partnership with MMG Contracts, with work now underway on the 84-square-metre premises.

The development is expected to generate 15 jobs during the construction phase, while a further eight permanent positions will be created once the venue opens. This will bring total staffing at the Dundonald location to 27 employees.

Regional Managing Director for Lidl Northern Ireland, Gordon Cruikshanks, said the company was pleased to move forward with a project that had been several years in the making.

“After six years in the planning process, we’re delighted to today confirm the development of a brand new public house and associated off-sales located adjacent to our Dundonald store which will enable customers to enjoy access to our award-winning range of wine, beer and spirits, some of which are crafted right here in Northern Ireland,” he said.

Mr Cruikshanks said the investment reflects Lidl’s continued commitment to the Northern Ireland market and the growing customer base in Dundonald.

“With the rising cost of living, many more shoppers are voting with their feet and choosing to shop at Lidl and, within the Dundonald community in particular, shoppers and residents deserve equal access to our full range of products,” he said.

“Today’s announcement and our investment in realising this project over the last number of years reflects our long-term commitment to Northern Ireland and our loyal customer base in Dundonald.”

According to Lidl, the decision to establish the pub was influenced by population growth in the area and increased demand for hospitality facilities.

Mr Cruikshanks described Dundonald as a thriving and expanding community, noting that the local population has grown by more than 20 per cent in recent years.

“Alongside our off-sales, we’re excited to launch a public house offering at the new premises, providing the local community with a place to connect and enjoy a quality hospitality experience,” he said.

Internal and external construction works are currently progressing, with The Middle Ale and its accompanying off-sales outlet expected to welcome customers during summer 2026, subject to final approvals and completion of the project.
