Top Gun 3 is officially taking off, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell once again.

The long-awaited third instalment in the blockbuster franchise was confirmed during CinemaCon, where Paramount Pictures unveiled details of its upcoming slate.

The studio confirmed that the film is already in development, with a script currently in progress, and that Cruise will reunite with longtime collaborator Jerry Bruckheimer.

The return marks another chapter in one of Hollywood’s most enduring action franchises. The original Top Gun, released in 1986, turned Cruise into a global superstar, while its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, became a cultural phenomenon upon its release in 2022.

The film grossed an impressive $1.5 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the decade and widely credited with revitalising cinemas following the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking previously, acclaimed director Steven Spielberg praised Cruise for helping to bring audiences back to theatres during a difficult period for the industry, highlighting the significance of Maverick’s success.

The upcoming sequel will follow on from the events of Top Gun: Maverick, which saw Maverick return to the elite flight school to train a new generation of pilots for a high-risk mission. Among them was Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late best friend “Goose”.

The film blended high-stakes aerial action with emotional storytelling, introducing a new cast of rising stars including Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, and Lewis Pullman, alongside established names such as Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm.

The sequel also marked a poignant final appearance from Val Kilmer, who reprised his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Kilmer died in 2025, adding emotional weight to his scenes in Maverick, which were widely praised by fans and critics alike.

While plot details for Top Gun 3 remain under wraps, early reports suggest that key creative figures from the previous film are returning.

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Maverick, is already working on the script, fuelling speculation that the story will continue to explore Maverick’s evolving role as both a pilot and mentor.

The announcement came as part of a wider presentation from Paramount, with Cruise also appearing in a pre-recorded segment emphasising the importance of the theatrical experience.

In the clip, he delivered a message from atop the studio lot, declaring: “The future looks great from here.”

The studio also used the event to underline its commitment to cinemas, with executives pledging a 45-day theatrical window for upcoming releases before they move to streaming platforms — a move aimed at protecting the big-screen experience in an increasingly digital era.

With Cruise once again stepping into the cockpit and development now firmly underway, Top Gun 3 is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated film releases of the coming years.
