The haunting coming of age thriller, The Winter Lake, is available now on digital download from various platforms in Ireland including iTunes, Sky Store, Virgin, Google Play, Rakuten, Chili and IFI@Home.
The Irish film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last year and is the feature debut from Phil Sheerin. The Winter Lake boasts a strong cast including two of Screen International’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow’, Netflix hit Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Death on the Nile), and Anson Boon (Pistol, 1917). Well-known IFTA-winning actors Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl) and Charlie Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Happy Valley, Love/Hate) also appear.
Set in Sligo, the film centres on alienated teenager Tom, and his troubled mother Elaine, who relocate to a run-down inherited farm. There, Tom makes a frightening discovery in a nearby seasonal lake. The consequences of this discovery draw the uneasy duo into contact with their neighbour Ward, and with his charismatic but secretive daughter Holly. As Elaine makes tentative steps toward forming a relationship with Ward, Holly draws Tom into a dangerous plan. The four characters’ conflicting fears, desires, wills and weaknesses become entwined and build to a violent climax, as a dark story of family, secrecy and sexuality is played out against the bleakly beautiful countryside.
I found out that The Winter Lake couldn’t have been any more real for it’s young star Anson Boon, who experienced a winter lake first hand!
The young performer will also soon be seen heading up Danny Boyle’s television series “Pistol”, playing Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten.
The Winter Lake is the second feature written by David Turpin, who wrote the award winning film The Lodgers which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017 and was also produced by Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde for Tailored Films.
The film’s Irish director Phil Sheerin is a graduate of the prestigious Masters in directing course from the National Film and Television School in the UK. His short films have won awards at the Galway Film Fleadh (Best Film for ‘North’ in 2015), Raindance, Aubagne, and he was nominated for a Student Academy Award.
