A young Irish filmmaker and a Czech woman have died following a road crash in Thailand, prompting an outpouring of grief in his Dublin community.
The Irish victim has been named locally as Max Hendrickson, a 20-year-old from Cabra in Dublin who was widely recognised for his emerging talent in filmmaking.
Mr Hendrickson was awarded Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year in 2023 at the Fresh International Film Festival and was studying in his second year at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.
It is understood he was travelling on a scooter with his girlfriend in Thailand when the fatal collision occurred.
Tributes have been paid to the young student, with local Labour TD Marie Sherlock describing the shock felt by family, friends and neighbours.
“I have just become aware of this tragedy today and my heart goes out to the family,” she said.
“I understand that he had an incredible future as a filmmaker ahead of him, and our thoughts are with the family.”
Ms Sherlock said the local community in Cabra had been left devastated by the news and that support was being offered to Mr Hendrickson’s loved ones during an extremely difficult time.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the Hendrickson family following the incident.
