An Irish man died after an altercation in the city of New York on Thursday. The young man, aged 21, was accosted by a man in the Queens area. The incident took place outside a bar in the city.

The man was found unconscious on the ground with injuries to his head. On Friday, an Irish man was charged with fatal assault of a young Irish immigrant just outside the Gaslight Bar. Irish national Steven O’Brien, who resides on 42nd Street in Woodside, was charged with assault after killing Danny McGee, 21, with one single punch to the head outside the bar in Queens.

It occurred at around 4.00 am in the Sunnyside section of Queens. Police confirmed that the argument began with a dispute inside the bar which then extended outside onto the street. O’Brien, 25, is a bartender in Manhattan from Dublin and McGee, was from Longford. O’Brien reportedly punched McGee in the head and then ran from the scene. McGee then collapsed on the pavement unconscious. He was later pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

Sources told the New York Daily News, O’Brien was charged with assault rather than homicide when it became apparent that O’Brien had no desire to kill the younger man. According to the Mail online, O’Brien bowed his head and wouldn’t speak to reporters as he was brought out of the 108th Precinct stationhouse on Friday afternoon.

O’Brien’s lawyer, Matthew Gartenberg said. ‘While this is a tragic event, Mr O’Brien denies all wrongdoing and is not guilty.’ O’Brien’s old GAA club, FR Manning Gaels said on Twitter,

‘Everyone in the club is shocked and saddened at the tragic passing of Danny McGee in New York. Above all he was a young gentleman, with a great sense of humor, who was loved by all who knew him. To his heartbroken family and wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathy,’

Friends got together to post O’Brien’s $25,000 bail, set at the arraignment on Friday night in Queens Criminal Court.
