Germany’s thrash-metalling veterans Rammstein have been roundly criticised after releasing a 35-second long trailer for their new track “Deutschland” which appears to show the band dressed as concentration camp prisoners, with nooses around the neck.

News agency Reuters quote Charlotte Knobloch, a Holocaust survivor and former president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany who spoke to well-known German tabloid Bild:

“With this video, the band has crossed a line.” She added: “The instrumentalisation and trivialisation of the Holocaust, as shown in the images, is irresponsible.”

Felix Klein, who leads the German government’s anti-Semitism office, said that if the Holocaust imagery in the video was just used to promote sales, then “it is a tasteless exploitation of artistic freedom.”

A spokeswoman with the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem called for artists to treat the memory of the victims of the Holocaust with respect. ”Yad Vashem does not generally criticize artistic works that use Holocaust images,” but that they should not insult or desecrate the memory of the Holocaust,” she told Bild.
