Anthony Herron, an English tourist who suffered critical injuries following an alleged assault in Dublin’s Temple Bar earlier this year, has died in the UK, his family confirmed over the weekend.
The 36-year-old had been visiting the Irish capital when the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 21 August, in Temple Bar Square, one of the city’s busiest nightlife areas. Emergency services responded quickly, and Mr Herron was taken to Beaumont Hospital with severe injuries.
After weeks of intensive treatment, he was transferred to a hospital in the UK to continue his recovery. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he died on Saturday, just over two months after the incident.
An update posted to a JustGiving fundraiser set up to support Mr Herron’s family shared the devastating news, describing him as “an amazing person” and calling what happened “truly heartbreaking.” His relatives added, “It’s an outrage to think this could actually happen to anyone in a city on an evening out.”
Mr Herron was a devoted father of two, with one of his children born after the attack — a detail that has struck a deep emotional chord with those following his story. Friends and supporters have continued to send tributes, describing him as “kind, funny, and full of life.”
A man in his 20s has been charged in connection with the Temple Bar Square incident and has appeared before the courts. Gardaí have continued their investigation into the case, which drew widespread attention at the time due to the unprovoked nature of the assault and its shocking aftermath.
