The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2026 so far, taking in around €580 million worldwide.
The film, based on Super Mario Galaxy, has performed strongly at the global box office despite receiving mixed-to-poor reviews from critics.
Audience turnout, however, has remained high, continuing the momentum built by Nintendo’s previous big-screen success, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
As of now, it sits second overall at the global box office for 2026, behind Chinese blockbuster Pegasus 3, which has earned approximately $640 million.
In third place is Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, which has surpassed $500 million worldwide.
For Irish audiences, the film’s success is being reflected locally as well. The movie has performed strongly across Irish cinemas, including major chains such as Odeon Cinemas and Vue Cinemas, where it has been a consistent top draw for families and younger viewers.
Its broad appeal — combining nostalgia for older fans with fast-paced animation for children — has made it one of the most reliable box office performers of the year.
The film’s popularity comes despite criticism around its storyline and depth, with many reviews pointing to a thin plot.
However, its vibrant visuals, recognisable characters, and connection to one of gaming’s most iconic franchises have helped it overcome those shortcomings commercially.
Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary — based on the novel by Andy Weir — has emerged as a surprise hit, particularly among older audiences.
Its mix of humour, science fiction and emotional storytelling, along with the character of Rocky, has driven strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings. The film also marks a major success for Amazon MGM Studios, as it continues to expand its theatrical presence.
Despite The Super Mario Galaxy Movie leading among Hollywood releases, the broader global box office picture highlights the growing dominance of international films, with Pegasus 3 outperforming Western competition.
