A garda was injured after being struck by an e-bike during an incident in West Dublin on Tuesday evening.
Officers from Blanchardstown Garda Station were on routine patrol in Hartstown Park when they observed a young male cycling erratically on an e-bike. Gardaí attempted to stop the cyclist, but during the interaction one officer was struck and knocked to the ground.
The Garda sustained minor injuries and later required stitches. He received medical treatment, and his injuries are not believed to be serious.
The young male was arrested at the scene and taken to a Garda station in Dublin for questioning. He has since been released without charge. Gardaí said a file will now be prepared for the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau, which deals with cases involving young offenders.
Local Garda Representative Association (GRA) representative Mark Ferris said incidents of this kind are becoming more frequent. He offered his support to the injured officer and praised him for continuing to carry out his duties in what he described as challenging circumstances.
Mr Ferris said Gardaí should be able to do their work without facing violence or intimidation. He said the incident reflects a wider concern about how members of An Garda Síochána are treated while on duty.
He called on the Government to take a stronger stance on assaults against gardaí, arguing that there must be a clear response to ensure such incidents are taken seriously. According to Mr Ferris, attacks on officers should be viewed as attacks on the State itself and treated accordingly.
Gardaí confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
