A homeless man who was found dead at a waste depot in Dublin last Friday had close relations with a man who drowned in the Grand Canal two years ago.
He had seen two of his friends die two years ago when he was living rough with them.
Gardaí are carrying out an investigation into the death of Andrew Haire, they are studying CCTV footage that has captured him last Thursday in Co Cork. It is understood that he used homeless services in Dublin and Cork and had also spent time in Kilkenny.
According to the Irish Times, remains were found in the Clondalkin waste depot, owned by Greyhound on Friday at around 9pm. A post-mortem examination was carried out, which came back inconclusive, so gardaí have been unable to rule out foul play.
In a statement issued on Sunday night, gardaí confirmed that human remains had been identified as those of Haire and released a photograph of him. Investigators hope the appeal will encourage anyone who knew him in Cork or Dublin to come forward with information that could help reconstruct the final days of his life.
According to reports, gardaí are trying to determine if Haire got into a large wheelie bin to sleep and died before it was emptied into a refuse truck and transported to the depot in Dublin.
However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that his death was the result of foul play, or that his body was placed in a large wheelie bin after he died. Waste from both Dublin and Cork is processed at the Dublin facility.
