A fundraiser has been launched to support a young man who was seriously injured in a crash on the M50 on Sunday morning.
Craig Fox was rushed to hospital following the collision and suffered internal bleeding. The third-year electrician remains in hospital and is said to be in shock following the incident, according to his mother.
The crash happened at around 5.30am on Sunday, August 9, when a car carrying eight teenage boys was travelling the wrong way down an off-ramp near Junction 12 at Firhouse before colliding with Craig's vehicle.
The vehicle is believed to have been stolen from the Rathmines area. Gardaí later spotted it in Monkstown, where it failed to stop before allegedly being driven the wrong way onto the M50.
All nine people involved in the collision were taken to hospital following the crash.
Craig's aunt, Kayleigh, has now set up a fundraiser to help cover his medical expenses and provide financial support during his recovery. His family says he will be unable to work for the foreseeable future as he faces months of physiotherapy and ongoing medical appointments.
In a message posted on the fundraiser page, Craig's family expressed their gratitude that he survived the devastating collision.
They said: "On Sunday morning our family member Craig was involved in a serious collision on the M50. His car was struck by a vehicle carrying eight passengers that was travelling on the wrong side of the road.
"It was a devastating crash, and we’re incredibly grateful and thankful that Craig survived."
The family said Craig's recovery would be a long one and that he would be unable to work while he undergoes treatment.
They added that the accident happened "through absolutely no fault of his own" and said they wanted to ease the financial pressure on him while he concentrates on getting better.
Craig's mother, Sara Jane, also spoke about the crash on the Neil Prendeville Show on RedFM, saying she believed there had been "guardian angels" looking over her son that morning.
She said: "My child is alive and he's lucky, but there has to be consequences for someone for what's happened."
Fiosrú, Ireland's policing watchdog, has also launched its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
