Irish families are marking 25 years since the September 11th attacks, remembering loved ones who died and those who played a part in the rescue effort.
At least 18 people with direct links to Ireland were among the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Among them was Anne-Marie McHugh, who was raised in Tuam, Co Galway.
RTÉ reports the 35-year-old was working on the 84th floor of the World Trade Centre's South Tower when the attacks took place.
Her sister Maura was in Dublin when she heard the news.
Anne had emailed her that morning, meaning Maura knew her sister was in the building.
She watched the events unfold on television as the second plane hit the South Tower.
"Anne was in the South Tower and that one was the second hit, but it was the first to fall. So we saw all of that live on television."
The family travelled to New York shortly afterwards, but communication difficulties meant they had no clear information about Anne.
Maura described the following days as "a slow loss of hope".
Anne's body was never recovered.
Her family had also been looking forward to her wedding. She was due to marry Patrick Day in Italy in November 2001.
Anne had previously survived the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing while working in the North Tower.
A memorial park was later established in Tuam in her memory.
The park has hosted an annual remembrance service since it opened in 2003, with this year's event taking place today at 2pm.
The anniversary also brings back memories for the family of Michael Lyons from Swinford in Co Mayo.
Michael was a New York City firefighter and was among those responding to the attacks.
His parents had moved back to Mayo from America in the 1970s, raising Michael and his three brothers near Swinford.
Michael later returned to New York and joined the fire department in 1998.
His brother Martin remembers the moment the family finally heard from him after the attacks.
"It was just such a relief to hear his voice. It was much after that we learned what else had happened on that day as well."
Michael was involved in the rescue of Pasquale Buzzelli, who survived the collapse of the North Tower.
He later spoke about the experience in the Channel 4 documentary 9/11: The Miracle Survivor.
Michael died in 2022 at the age of 53 after being diagnosed with lung cancer linked to his work at Ground Zero.
Despite the impact on his health, his brother says Michael never regretted helping others that day.
"He always said though he never had any regrets, even when he got diagnosed with cancer that was relating to the day itself."
For both families, the 25th anniversary is a chance to remember the people behind the tragedy.
Maura says she chooses to remember Anne as someone who enjoyed life.
"She was a great friend, a good sister. She loved life. She lived life fully. And that's what I think about her."
Martin says his brother's legacy is also about helping others when they need it most.
"He was above all a proud dad and gave so much of his life to help others."
