A man in his 30s from Limerick has died following a fatal assault outside an apartment block in Dublin 7.

The man, named locally as Jamie Bailey, was found with serious injuries on the footpath outside the Blackhorse Place apartment block on Blackhorse Avenue in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardaí had been alerted to the incident by members of the public. He was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin 1, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí believe a knife or another bladed weapon may have been used in the attack, which is understood to have happened between 2am and 3.30am.

Detectives and a divisional search unit have been searching the area for the suspected weapon, including checking drains near the scene.

Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from a nearby convenience store, which was closed at the time of the assault.

Gardaí are understood to be investigating whether the killing was linked to a personal dispute that had escalated in recent weeks. They suspect the victim may have known his attacker.

Blackhorse Avenue was closed to traffic on Sunday as forensic examinations were carried out, with bus services in the area diverted.

The coroner and State Pathologist have been notified, and a postmortem examination is due to take place.

Cabra/Glasnevin councillor Séamas McGrattan said he was shocked by the incident and called for action to tackle knife crime in the capital.

“Knife crime has become a real problem in our city. We need an urgent and serious response,” the Sinn Féin councillor said.

“People must have the right to walk the streets of Dublin safely and without fear.”

He also called for an increased Garda presence on the streets to deter crime and antisocial behaviour.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact Bridewell Garda Station.
