Fontaines D.C's Grian Chatten has insisted that the band were unaware that AI was used in the making of their music video for 'Marianne'.
This comes after Fontaines D.C. released their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber last week, an album which includes lead track, Marianne, as well ‘Tongue’, and cinematic collab with Rosalía, ‘Where Is Gone?’.
Now, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Grian Chatten has spoken about how the video for Marianne was credited with 'AI Artists', and stated that "none of us were told about" the use of AI being involved in the video.
Upon finding out about this, Chatten said he called his management team and asked “What the f***, is this true?”.
“Somewhere in the process, someone from the VFX team, I guess, used some kind of AI in the workflow,” Chatten added, before explaining that although there were over 100 people who came together to work on the music video, “not even our label or our management were told about it, [so] it was a real shock".
On AI's presence in the video, Chatten remarked that it was “f****** ironic”, “contradictory” and “f****** sucks”, considering how the album is based on themes of isolation, the decline in socialising, and the growing dependence on the use of technology and more.
The singer stated that the band have already taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again, including writing “into our contracts going forward that it can’t be in our music videos” and that they “don’t condone it”.
Chatten reiterated his opposition to artificial intelligence, especially its presence in creative projects, stating that “AI is literally rendering our souls obsolete and I think that is true death”.
“Every conversation [about it] just ends grim,” he continued, adding that he thinks people “should just shut it off” as it “threatens to rob from the human race”. (All quotes according to the Los Angeles Times).
Dopamine Chamber looks set to reach number one in the UK's Official Album Chart, with Marianne set to feature in the UK Top 40 singles chart. More on this from Nova here.
