Andrew Garfield has revealed that playing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman led him to delete ChatGPT altogether.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Garfield discussed his experience filming Artificial, a new drama directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. The movie explores the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and centres on key figures involved in its development, including Ike Barinholtz as co-founder Elon Musk.
When asked about his feelings toward AI, Garfield responded with humour before acknowledging that the subject raises important questions about the future. According to the actor, spending months immersed in the themes of artificial intelligence left him feeling more cautious about the technology's growing influence.
The experience, he said, reminded him of another role he played earlier in his career, "it's the same thing that happened to me when I did 'The Social Network,' which was I got off Facebook immediately," Garfield said. "I got off my ChatGPT immediately."

Garfield suggested that many people, including technology leaders, are still trying to understand where AI development may ultimately lead “I think what I suppose is good and transparent is they’re like, ‘Yeah, no, we kind of don’t know who’s going to lose their jobs and how we’re going to create an economy that works for ordinary people. But we’re go to find out! And I promise you it’s gonna be awesome!’"
The film is scheduled to premiere at the New York Film Festival before its wider release in January 2027.
