Parents in Ballymun, Dublin are being issued with safety leaflets advising them what to do “if violence or gunfire occurs”, following a series of alarming incidents involving firearms in the area — including one in which a child discharged a gun.
The guidance, distributed through local schools, comes after an incident earlier this week in which an 11-year-old boy found a loaded firearm that had been discarded and accidentally fired it.
The child is understood to have been in the company of a younger child at the time.
A man in his 20s has since appeared before the courts in connection with the incident.
The leaflets, published by the Ballymun Drug and Alcohol Taskforce, set out practical steps for families to follow in the event of nearby violence.
Advice includes instructions to “stay inside”, “bring young people indoors calmly and quickly”, “lock doors”, and “close blinds or curtains”.
Parents are also encouraged to move children away from windows and use calm, reassuring language during any incident.
The move reflects growing concern among parents and educators in the north Dublin suburb, after multiple discoveries of firearms in recent days.
In a separate incident last weekend, gardaí recovered another loaded gun concealed in a bush near a playground in Coultry Park, roughly a 20-minute walk from where the child discharged the weapon.
The incidents are believed to be linked to ongoing feuding between organised crime groups in the area, raising fears about the risks posed to children and families going about their daily lives.
While the distribution of the pamphlets is intended as a precautionary measure, it underlines the level of unease locally, with parents now being formally advised on how to respond to potential gunfire in their communities.
Local school representatives have indicated that while many younger children may not fully understand the events that unfolded, concern among parents has been significant.
The decision to circulate the leaflets is aimed at ensuring families feel equipped to respond quickly and safely should a similar situation arise again.
The incidents have also reignited wider concerns about safety in public spaces, particularly for children.
Reports from the area suggest that the presence of weapons, alongside ongoing antisocial behaviour, is increasingly impacting how families use outdoor spaces, with some parents opting to keep children indoors or under closer supervision.
Despite the recent scare, community voices have stressed that Ballymun remains a strong and close-knit area, with many local initiatives and youth programmes working to support young people.
However, there is a growing sense that additional resources and intervention may be needed to address the underlying issues contributing to crime and disorder.
