Bohemian FC has made League of Ireland history today by publishing its first-ever Social Impact Report, detailing the club’s community influence between 2018 and 2023. The report — a first of its kind in Irish football — was officially launched this morning at Dublin’s Mansion House by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain.

Commissioned by the club and carried out by accredited social value practitioner Sandra Velthuis of Whitebarn Consulting, the in-depth report estimates that the club generated over €51 million in social value during the five-year period, an average return of €8.5 million per year.

The research drew on the views of more than 1,400 individuals and organisations, highlighting Bohemians’ rapid growth in membership, social initiatives, and community engagement. Among the key findings:

  • Voluntary effort was valued at just under €2.3 million, playing a major role in the club’s success.

  • Membership and season ticket numbers more than tripled, from 929 in 2018 to 3,102 in 2023.

  • The fanbase became significantly more diverse and representative of wider Irish society.

  • The club delivered initiatives across areas including health and wellbeing, social inclusion, climate justice, accessibility, crime prevention, and arts and heritage.

The report also noted that the greatest social value was created for people who play football with the club — from professional players to those engaged through outreach programmes. Benefits included physical and mental health improvements, skill development, and broader life opportunities. Their families also saw positive impacts.

Next in line were fans, for whom the report cited a “strong sense of belonging” as a major benefit. Social value was also generated for club staff, volunteers, and community partners.

In 2023, the club launched its Football Social Responsibility and Community Strategy 2023–2027, marking a key milestone in its evolution as a community-focused organisation.

The report affirms what many have long believed: that Bohemian FC is far more than just a football team. It is a progressive, socially engaged institution contributing to the wellbeing of communities in Dublin 7 and beyond.

However, the research also underscores the importance of strategic clarity going forward, especially with the planned redevelopment of Dalymount Park. It recommends that the club consolidate its efforts and maintain football at the core of its identity, even as its social impact continues to expand.

Bohemian FC’s initiative sets a new standard for Irish football, demonstrating how sport can be a powerful force not only on the pitch, but throughout the community.
