Jon Bon Jovi made a surprise appearance during Super Bowl 2026 thanks to a high-profile State Farm advert, with the rock icon admitting he “couldn’t say no” to being part of a campaign he views as modern American pop culture.
The New Jersey singer features in the insurer’s Super Bowl commercial alongside Danny McBride, Keegan-Michael Key, Hailee Steinfeld and rising pop group Katseye. The ad, which debuted in full during Sunday night’s game, centres on a spoof insurance company called Halfway There Insurance, built around a tongue-in-cheek rewrite of Bon Jovi’s chart-topping hit Livin’ On a Prayer.
In the sketch, McBride and Key perform the song with altered lyrics poking fun at inadequate insurance cover, while Steinfeld plays a sceptical customer pointing out its flaws. The spot ends with a cameo that delighted viewers: a leather-jacketed Bon Jovi pulling up in a 1971 Ford Torino alongside Jake From State Farm, played by Kevin Miles, before casually offering Steinfeld a lift. The tagline lands moments later: “Stop livin’ on a prayer. Get State Farm.”
Speaking to Billboard, Bon Jovi said the campaign immediately appealed to him.
“I do believe that the (State Farm) commercials are a part of American pop culture right now,” he said. “They’re fun, they’re funny, they’re whimsical. And when they came to me with it, I saw the script and I found joy in it. I just smiled — as simple as that. I couldn’t say no to that.”
He added that the light-hearted tone reflected where he currently is in his life and career.
“To be part of something that is fun and lighthearted… to go and have fun and have joy in my heart and not get too bogged down in all the details and seriousness of it now, that’s what I want,” he said. “A song like this transcends anything we’ve ever discussed, ever, in my career. You should have some fun with it.”
The timing of the advert also carried personal significance. With the New England Patriots representing the AFC in the Super Bowl, Bon Jovi, a long-time Patriots supporter and close friend of team owner Robert Kraft, found himself enjoying some friendly rivalry on set. That included good-natured sparring with Steinfeld, who is married to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
“I kept my distance,” he joked. “I’d just hold up my Patriots logo every once in a while and remind them who’s in first place.”
The Super Bowl appearance comes as Bon Jovi prepares for a carefully managed return to live performance after several years away from touring. He has been largely sidelined since 2022 due to serious vocal cord issues, a struggle explored in detail in the 2024 docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. His recovery involved vocal cord medialisation surgery, reconstructive procedures and extensive therapy.
“The recovery was much longer than anticipated,” he said, admitting there were moments he considered walking away altogether. “There was many a time I thought it was good enough and the inner circle would say, ‘No, it’s not good enough.’”
Now, however, he says he is finally confident in his voice again.
“I’m 102% confident that it’s really not an issue anymore, thank God,” he said.
That confidence will be put to the test this summer when Bon Jovi returns to the stage for the first time in years, beginning with nine sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden from 7 July, followed by stadium dates in Edinburgh, Croke Park in Dublin, and three nights at Wembley Stadium in London.

Despite overwhelming demand, he has ruled out adding more dates in 2026.
“Everybody’s already ‘please, please, please,’ and the answer is ‘nope,’” he said, stressing he is determined not to rush the comeback. Instead, he views the shows as a measured rebirth.
“I really believe this is kind of a rebirth, just getting back to my youth, with all the wisdom that I carry,” he said. “All I wanted out of this was the simple joy of performing again.”
For Irish fans, that return will feel particularly significant when Bon Jovi takes the stage at Croke Park, marking a major milestone in his comeback. As his Super Bowl cameo showed, he may be embracing a lighter, more playful chapter — but the passion for performing, he insists, is firmly locked back in place.
