“felt like the right place to be”

When news of his nomination came through, Cillian Murphy was having tea with his parents at the family in Cork. Does it get more Irish than that?

Father of two, Murphy added that his wife Yvonne McGuinness was also there.

Following confirmation of his Oscars nod, the Peaky Blinders star revealed that his mother brought out the cake, to celebrate.

“I was at home in Cork, in my parents’ kitchen … So I heard when the phone started pinging…It was just by coincidence I happened to be at home”, Murphy told the Irish Sun.

He also added, “I was with my parents and my wife. It felt like the right place to be”.

“We were just having a cup of tea, and then my mum brought out the cake – so we had tea and cake. So it was nice”.

“full circle”

In a separate interview with the Irish Times, Cillian Murphy described finding out about his Oscars nomination as a “full circle” kind of moment.

“It’s really nice to be in Cork. I mean, it wasn’t planned. But it’s nice to be back in the kitchen where I grew up, just sitting in the same chair, talking with my parents”, he stated.

“And then this mad bit of news comes in, so there was a nice logic to it”.

This nomination comes just weeks after Golden Globe winner Cillian Murphy was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor at the SAG Awards for Oppenheimer.

Next month will also see another film starring Murphy, Small Things Likes These, which tells the story of the Magdalene Laundries, open the Berlin Film Festival.
