Cillian Murphy is to return as gangster Tommy Shelby in the new spin off movie for Peaky Blinders.

Oscar winner Murphy will return for this spin off movie of the hit crime drama, creator Steven Knight confirmed.

“Murphy is definitely returning for [the movie]”, Steven Knight announced. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth”.

Knight confirmed this news at a recent premiere for his new BBC drama, The Town.

Back in 2021, it was confirmed that Peaky Blinders would be concluded with a new spin-off movie, instead of a seventh series.

It had run for six seasons from 2013 to 2022.

“I’d love to do it”

In a previous interview with Esquire in 2022, Steven Knight stated that he was keen to wrap up all loose ends with a film for Peaky Blinders.

“The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell,” he said. “What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be”.

Cillian Murphy who recently won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Oppenheimer, had also previously spoken of his fondness to star in a Peaky Blinders spin off movie.

“If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it,” the Cork native told Rolling Stone last year. “But it has to be right. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more”.

Speaking of Murphy, comedian Jonathan Ross faced strong backlash for referring to the Cork native as a “British star” at the awards ceremony. More on that from Nova here.
