It’s do-or-die for Ireland’s World Cup hopes as Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side take on Czechia in a massive play-off clash tonight in Prague.

With a place in the next round – and a step closer to the World Cup – on the line, this is being billed as one of the biggest nights for Irish football in over a decade.

Confidence in the camp is high after Ireland stunned many by beating Portugal and Hungary to reach this stage, but the job is far from finished. Now, it all comes down to whether Troy Parrott and co can deliver when it matters most.

For fans back home, kick-off is at 7.45pm Irish time, while those in the stadium will see the game get underway at 8.45pm local time. The match will be shown live on RTÉ2, with coverage starting from 7pm, and it will also be available to stream on RTÉ Player.

On the pitch, there are still a few selection headaches for Ireland.

The suspension of Liam Scales means a reshuffle is needed, particularly at left wing-back, while all eyes will also be on whether Harvey Vale is handed a start following his recent switch from England.

Up front, Parrott will be looking to continue his red-hot form in what is easily the biggest game of his international career so far.

Ireland are expected to line up in a 3-4-2-1 system, with Caoimhin Kelleher in goal behind a back three of Jake O’Brien, Nathan Collins, and Dara O’Shea. Seamus Coleman is likely to captain the side once again, with Jayson Molumby and Jack Taylor anchoring midfield, while creativity could come from Finn Azaz and Vale in support of Parrott.

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

A win tonight would send Ireland into the next play-off round, where they would face the winners of Denmark vs North Macedonia.

Crucially, that game is set to take place this Tuesday at the Aviva Stadium, giving Irish fans a huge home tie to look forward to if Hallgrímsson’s men can get the job done in Prague.

Victory would also keep alive Ireland’s dream of qualifying for their first World Cup since 2002, marking a major turning point for the national team under their current manager.

It would be another statement result following last year’s upsets and would firmly signal that this squad is capable of competing on the biggest stage.

However, defeat would bring that dream to an abrupt end.

There’s no safety net here – lose tonight, and Ireland’s World Cup campaign is over. It would be a bitter blow after the progress made in recent months and would leave serious questions about what comes next for the team.

The bookmakers have Czechia as slight favourites heading into the game, but Ireland have already shown they thrive as underdogs.

A draw after 90 minutes would send the match to extra-time and potentially penalties – something Irish fans will be hoping to avoid on what promises to be a nerve-shredding night.

Speaking ahead of the match, captain Seamus Coleman made it clear what’s driving the squad, saying “As much as us players want to do it for ourselves and for the manager and all the people behind the scenes, we do want to do it for the people of our country as well.”

Meanwhile, Hallgrímsson emphasised the importance of staying composed under pressure, adding “[Keeping calm] is the key. I think we all know by now why we got good results and good performances, and that’s the key. Not to be overambitious tomorrow, stay on point, focus on why we are here and try to prove that.”

Thousands of Irish fans have already descended on Prague, turning the city green ahead of kick-off. Now, all that’s left is for the team to deliver on the pitch.

It’s D-Day for Ireland – and everything is on the line.
