It has been confirmed that an official app based on the ‘David Bowie Is… ‘exhibition is set to launch in January 2019. The original exhibition focused on “the broad range of the late artist’s collaborations with artists and designers in the fields of fashion, sound, graphics, theatre, art, and film”.

It closed permanently in July, five years after it opened at the V&A in London. The exhibition went on to become the institution’s most-attended touring exhibition. Geoffrey Marsh and Victoria Broackes curated the exhibition, which pulled over 2 million punters across 12 cities.

After initial plans in the summer, the David Bowie Is… app has now been given the go-ahead for a launch on January 8th, 2019 to honour what would’ve been Bowie’s 72nd birthday. The Augmented Reality (AR) app will be available in iOS and Android.

It will give fans the opportunity to access the show’s hundreds of costumes, videos, handwritten lyrics, original works of art and much more. Dozens of items that weren’t in the original exhibition will also be included in the AR version of the app.

The David Bowie Is… AR mobile app is the first release from a new collaboration between Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc and the David Bowie Archive. New York studio, Planeta, is designing and developing the AR/VR interpretations of the original museum experience at the V&A. A VR version is also on the cards.
