Elton John has celebrated 35 years of sobriety.
The music legend has always been very open about his previous struggles with alcohol and drug addiction between the late 1970s and 1980s. He recently took to social media, sharing a picture of the cards and flowers that he has received from close friends and family.
In one of these cards, Elton's sons Elijah and Zachary wished their father a "happy 35th birthday", writing: "We are so proud of you".
Elsewhere, the singer also shared two framed drawings featuring balloons, swirls and love hearts. While the drawings are covered by the cards, the messages "Happy sobriety", and "So proud of you" can still be spotted on them.
The drawings have been presumably done by Elton John's children, whom he shares with husband David Furnish. In this post, alongside love heart emojis, Elton John added the caption: "Grateful for all the love on my sobriety birthday".
Elton John's post received a myriad of supportive messages from household names like tennis legend Billie Jean King, and singer Christina Perri.
Elton John has been sober since 1990.
"You make terrible decisions on drugs," he said last December. "I wanted love so badly, I'd just take hostages. I'd see someone I liked and spend three or four months together, and then they would resent me because they had nothing in their life apart from me. It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt".
Recently, Billie Joel reflected on his previous feud with Elton John in his new documentary, 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes". More on this here.
