A new survival thriller starring Brad Pitt is generating early buzz after the release of its first trailer, revealing a gritty wilderness story that pairs the Oscar-winning actor with an unexpected co-star: a loyal service dog named Odin.

The film, titled Heart of the Beast, sees Brad Pitt playing James Belmont, a former U.S. Army Special Forces officer whose life is turned upside down after a small aircraft crash leaves him stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness.

Alone, injured, and far from civilisation, Belmont must rely on his survival instincts—and his bond with his retired combat dog—to make it back alive.

The project reunites Brad Pitt with director David Ayer, marking their first collaboration since the 2014 war film Fury.

Ayer, known for his intense action-driven storytelling, returns to military-adjacent themes, this time shifting into a survival thriller framed by the unforgiving landscape of Alaska.

The trailer, released by Paramount Pictures, shows Belmont navigating extreme conditions including freezing rivers, steep mountain terrain, and hostile wildlife.

The dog, Odin, is portrayed as both companion and protector, helping the stranded soldier fend off threats including bears and wolves as the pair attempt to survive against the odds.

At one point in the trailer, Brad Pitt’s character reflects on resilience and instinct, saying: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

Later, he makes a promise to his four-legged companion: “I’m going to get you home. We just have to do this the hard way.”

The film also features an ensemble supporting cast including Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons and actor Anna Lambe, adding further depth to the survival narrative.

Behind the scenes, Brad Pitt also takes on producing duties alongside Olivia Hamilton and Marty Bowen, highlighting his continued involvement in both creative and production roles in major Hollywood projects.

Heart of the Beast was written by Cameron Alexander, who also serves as executive producer alongside a team that includes Damien Chazelle, Scott Lumpkin, Chris Long, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Sophie Cassidy, and Zack Conroy.

The film is produced in association with Domain Entertainment and Gulfstream Pictures, and is part of a wider collaboration involving Wild Chickens, Temple Hill, and Kino World Productions.

Early footage suggests the film leans heavily into survival realism, with an emphasis on physical endurance, isolation, and the psychological toll of being cut off from civilisation. The Alaskan setting plays a central role, functioning almost as an antagonist in its own right, with vast frozen landscapes and unpredictable weather shaping the story’s tension.

For Brad Pitt, the role continues a recent trend of physically demanding performances following his appearance in F1, which earned critical attention and an Oscar nomination.

His portrayal of James Belmont appears to blend action-heavy sequences with quieter, emotional moments centred on trust and survival, particularly in his relationship with Odin.

Heart of the Beast is scheduled for theatrical release on September 25.
