Football Fans Turn to Junk Food for Comfort When Their Team is Losing, Survey Finds

Football fans are far more likely to reach for comfort food when their team is losing, new research suggests — with chocolate, chips, pies and alcohol topping the list of morale-boosting treats.

Studies show that when a team is behind at half-time, supporters often turn to high-calorie snacks, even when healthier options are available. And if their side loses at full-time, fans are again more inclined to choose unhealthy food and drink.

That’s good news for the waistlines of supporters of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, whose clubs are currently performing well. But fans of teams hovering near the relegation zone — such as Leeds, Wolves and Burnley — may be more vulnerable to stress-eating as the season progresses.

Footie finance expert Kieran Maguire, author of The Price of Football, said research clearly shows a link between match results and food choices.
“Academic colleagues have done research into what we eat, dependent on whether we win or lose a football match. And what happens here is that if your football club loses a match, you are more inclined to consume high-calorie food — 16% more calories — than if your team won, because you’re moving to comfort eating.”

He added that the trend continues after the final whistle.
“Post-match behaviour — firstly, you’re less likely to eat, but what you are likely to eat is going to be less healthy for you. And also what they did say was there was anecdotal evidence that people might have more alcohol if they’re losing at half-time than if they’re winning. We go there for comfort… But it might be that you’ll have alcohol instead of something else. But in terms of what you consume, there is a difference.”

With relegation battles tightening and emotions running high, researchers suggest some fans may end the season carrying a little extra weight — depending on how their club performs.
