Gardaí say they will be out in force to police new rules which automatically disqualify motorists who are caught drink-driving. Anyone caught will be handed a minimum three-month ban from midnight tonight.

Before now, a driver detected with a blood alcohol concentration of between 50 and 80 milligrams was punished with a €200 fine and three penalty points.

Meanwhile,  Motorists are being asked not to take risks ahead of a chilly Bank Holiday weekend. Met Eireann is forecasting a cold snap, with sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions predicted. With the Bank Holiday weekend coinciding with the mid-term break for schools, many cars may sit idle.
