The long-awaited return of Euphoria is finally in sight, with HBO dropping a gripping new trailer for season three — and a haunting question at its centre: “Have we finally gone too far?”

Spoken by Rue, played by Zendaya, the line plays over a montage of the show’s core characters, hinting at just how far their lives have spiralled since viewers last saw them more than four years ago.

The new season premieres on April 12, marking one of the most highly anticipated TV returns in recent years.

The trailer signals a major shift for the series.

No longer set in the hallways of East Highland High, season three jumps forward five years, following the characters into early adulthood as they navigate increasingly complex — and dangerous — lives.

Drugs, betrayal, fractured relationships and blurred moral lines all take centre stage, with creator Sam Levinson promising the show’s most ambitious chapter yet. He previously said he feels “strongly this is our best season yet.”

The newly released footage expands on an earlier teaser, revealing Rue in serious trouble once again.

At the start of the trailer, she is being interrogated by drug enforcement agents and asked if she has ever been to Mexico — before scenes cut to her south of the border, where she appears to be forced to swallow something suspicious.

The danger escalates further when she is warned that someone named Alamo is trying to kill her, along with notorious dealer Laurie, whom Rue crossed in season two.

At one point, a police officer tells her she is “a good kid in a bad situation” — a line that echoes the show’s ongoing exploration of addiction and consequence.

Elsewhere, the trailer offers dramatic updates on the wider ensemble.

Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie is now married to Jacob Elordi’s Nate, in a storyline that looks set to be explosive. Cassie is also working as an adult content creator, with glimpses of her wedding suggesting a moment Levinson has already teased as “unforgettable.”

In a surprising twist, her former best friend Maddy — played by Alexa Demie — re-enters her life and appears to be helping film that content.

Hunter Schafer’s Jules is shown attending art school and pursuing a career as a painter, while also working as a “sugar baby”, going on dates with older men. Meanwhile, Maude Apatow’s Lexi is now working as an assistant to a showrunner played by Sharon Stone.

The scale of interest in the show is already evident.

HBO confirmed the second season three trailer racked up a staggering 157 million views within 48 hours, making it the most-watched returning original trailer in HBO and HBO Max history in that timeframe — underlining the cultural weight Euphoria now carries.

Since debuting in 2019, the series has become one of HBO’s biggest hits, with its season two finale in 2022 drawing a record 6.6 million viewers across platforms.

It has also helped launch its cast into global stardom, with Zendaya going on to star in major films like Dune and Spider-Man, while Elordi has taken on high-profile roles including Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights.

However, the road to season three has been far from smooth. Production delays — including industry-wide Hollywood strikes — pushed filming back significantly, while the show has also been impacted by tragedy. Angus Cloud, who played fan-favourite Fezco, died aged 25 in 2023, and Eric Dane, who portrayed Cal Jacobs, died in February 2026. Their absence raises major questions about how storylines will evolve, particularly as Fezco’s arc ended on a dramatic cliffhanger.

Speaking previously, co-star Colman Domingo said the cast had come together to grieve, adding that Cloud had been expected to play a major role in the new season.

Season three will consist of eight episodes, airing weekly, with the finale set for May 31.

Alongside returning cast members, around 20 new faces are joining, including singer Rosalía and media personality Trisha Paytas.

For viewers in Ireland, Euphoria will be available to stream via Sky Atlantic and NOW (formerly NOW TV), which carries HBO content in this region, rather than HBO Max directly.

As for what to expect overall, Levinson has hinted at a darker, more cinematic direction, previously describing the new season as having a “film noir” tone, with Rue at its centre as she tries to navigate a corrupt world while holding onto some sense of morality.

Whether this will be the show’s final chapter remains unconfirmed, but with the scale of anticipation — and the weight of everything that has happened both on and off screen — season three is shaping up to be its most defining yet.

And if Rue’s chilling question is anything to go by, the answer may not be far off.
