Hugh Jackman has once again left the door open to playing Wolverine, suggesting that his heroic journey “doesn’t feel like the end” — even after the character’s dramatic conclusion in Logan (2017).

Jackman first donned the adamantium claws in 2000’s X-Men, launching what would become one of the longest and most iconic runs by any actor in a superhero franchise. Over the next two decades, he played Logan/Wolverine in nine films, including X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine and the critically acclaimed Logan, in which the character died. Logan was seen as the definitive end to Jackman’s Wolverine arc, and for years the actor insisted he was done with the role.

Even so, he surprised fans in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, reprising the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a fresh multiverse twist alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool — a film that broke records and reignited speculation about his future in the franchise.

In a new interview on Variety’s Actor on Actor series with Cynthia Erivo, Jackman reflected on his long relationship with Wolverine and teased that his story may not be fully over.

When asked by Erivo, “Is it the end for you when it comes to Wolverine?” he replied:

“It doesn't feel like the end. It really feels like the end after Logan. If I look back, I needed to claim it as the end. There were some things I believed this movie needed to be, and I had to fight for them and say; this is the last time I'm doing this. And I don't mind not doing it again. And we did it.”

“It's not a big deal,” he continued, laughing with Erivo. “And it was awesome. I had so much fun.”

Those comments echo a sentiment Jackman has expressed in other interviews, where he has said he will “never say never” about playing Wolverine again after initially retiring the character.

Whether this hints at another MCU appearance — perhaps in future films such as Avengers: Secret Wars or beyond — remains unconfirmed. But for fans of his nearly 25-year run as one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, Jackman’s playful ambiguity will be enough to keep speculation alive well into 2026.

@varietymagazine Hugh Jackman says “it doesn't feel like the end” when it comes to playing #Wolverine. He tells Cynthia Erivo that he had to “fight” to claim 2017’s #Logan as the definitive end of his decades-long run in the #XMen films, but he slowly changed his mind about not returning after watching the #Deadpool movies. “There were parts of my brain, particularly when I saw ‘Deadpool,’ I was like, ‘Ooh. I see ‘48 Hrs.’ I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.’ But I would shove it down,” Jackman recalled. “I’ve told everyone that I’m done. I’m not one of those guys. Then I went, ‘You know what? I change my mind.’ It’s not that big of a deal. I’m not even gonna say I’m sorry. And it was so awesome.” Watch the full #ActorsOnActors ♬ original sound - Variety
