Investigation Underway Following Violent Death Of Inmate At Dublin's Wheatfield Prison

An investigation has started following the violent death of an inmate at Dublin's Wheatfield Prison.

The victim, who was reportedly aged in his late 30s, died following a fatal assault at the prison. Emergency services attended the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead. This incident happened at 10pm on Thursday night.

It was confirmed that officials are investigating in order to determine if the victim suffered knife injuries during the violent assault involving another inmate. Separate investigations are now underway.

Following this, the Irish Prison Service said in a statement that they “can confirm a death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on 13 August 2026". 

“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant", the spokesperson said. “The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office. The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends". 

“Next of kin have been informed". (All quotes according to the Irish Independent).
