The person of significant interest being sought by Gardaí investigating the murder of Jamey Carney has reportedly been arrested in Jordan.

According to the Irish Independent, Ahmed Al-Saqar, Ms Carney's boyfriend, was arrested by Jordanian police in recent days after returning to his home country. Irish officials were informed of the arrest on Monday.

A murder investigation was launched after Jamey Carney's body was discovered at her home on Muckross Road in Killarney last Tuesday morning.

Since then, Gardaí have been seeking to speak to a man they described as a "person of significant interest" who they believe may have information that could assist their investigation.

It is understood the man travelled by bus from Killarney to Dublin in the early hours of Tuesday before boarding a flight to the Middle East.

The Irish Mirror reports that Jordan's Directorate of Public Security, the country's main policing body, ordered Al-Saqar's detention after becoming aware he had entered the country late last week.

According to the newspaper, Jordanian authorities arrested the 28-year-old after learning he was the focus of the Garda investigation, despite not having received a formal request from Irish authorities to detain him.

Investigators believe Al-Saqar travelled to Jordan after first arriving in Turkey and was attempting to reach Al-Husn, his hometown located around 65 kilometres north of Amman.

It has previously emerged that Al-Saqar sought asylum in Ireland in June 2024 and was appealing the refusal of his application at the time of Ms Carney's death.

Earlier on Monday, it was confirmed that Gardaí had alerted international law enforcement agencies, including Interpol and Europol, as part of the investigation into Jamey Carney's murder.

Speaking earlier today, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said Gardaí were pursuing a very clear line of inquiry and confirmed there would be engagement between Irish investigators and police in Jordan.

Tánaiste Simon Harris also said Irish authorities would work closely with international law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.

"Our sympathies are with the Carney family after the horrific loss of Jamey, and there's obviously a very ongoing active investigation in relation to this murder inquiry, and everybody wants to see justice done," he said.

"Obviously, the Irish authorities will be working hand in glove with any and all international authorities that may be required to ensure justice for Jamey and the apprehension of her killer."

The investigation by Gardaí in Killarney remains ongoing.

43-year-old Jamey Carney, who was originally from New York, moved to Killarney about five years ago and lived with her daughter.
