John Lydon has explained his reasons for appearing on The Masked Singer.
The former Sex Pistols singer appeared on the show last week, having been revealed as the performer, which saw him perform a cover of Olivia Newton-John's 'Physical', and was later subjected to the sing-off against the 'Monkey Business' contestant.
The show saw Lydon also deliver a live rendition of Tom Jones' 'Sex Bomb' while donning the Yak costume.
Afterwards, Lydon's official social media account said: “John’s got the sad sack yak off his back and now he’s off to record the new PiL album! Thank you ITV, Masked Singer! Let’s Get Physical".
Reflecting on his time on the show, Lydon revealed that he chose to perform on it in order to help fund the new Public Image Ltd album.
“Fun, firstly. Mostly, accurately, the money", he explained, before adding that the money he received went towards the band's new album.
Revealing that none of his bandmates had worked out that it was him in the Yak costume, Lydon added: “The money has now gone and paid for us to go and record in Portugal for a solid month. And, a little holiday afterwards".
“They were wondering where I got the money from the studio”, before saying that “they never put the two together".
After the show, Lydon bluntly admitted that this show was far from a career highlight.
“I hardly think so. For me, I hope the fun comes across".
He added: “Rather than going up there and doing sing-along and guessing who I am straight away, I thought, show the other side of me. An absolute funstar. I’m the court jester by nature. It’s just the way it is".
When asked whether he was sad to be leaving the television show, the former Sex Pistols frontman replied: “Certainly not. I think it’s been a privilege for you to have me". Check out more from this and Nova's report on this here.
This also comes a month after Lydon took aim at his former Sex Pistols bandmates, claiming that none of them reached out to him following the death of his wife Nora.
Lydon who married Nora in 1979, cared for her during her long term battle with Alzheimer's disease. Nora passed away in 2023.
When asked if he had heard from any of his former Sex Pistols bandmates, Lydon replied: “I expected some kind of connection when Nora died, but nothing".
