CCTV systems are set to be introduced at a number of locations across County Kildare in an effort to tackle illegal dumping.
Kildare County Council plans to roll out the technology in Kildare town, Newbridge, Clane and Maynooth, following its use in Athy, where a number of people were fined.
The issue was discussed at a Naas Municipal District committee meeting, where councillors called for further measures to address illegal dumping hotspots.
Cllr Fintan Brett described illegal dumping as a “scourge” and called for a dedicated funding stream in the Naas area to provide multiple CCTV systems for use at locations where dumping is a recurring problem.
Cllr Carmel Kelly also called on the council to provide mobile cameras that could be moved between different locations as needed.
Kildare County Council confirmed that there is currently no dedicated funding stream for the provision of CCTV systems.
However, the council said each municipal district had been asked at the beginning of the year to consider using Local Property Tax funding for the technology. CCTV systems are being prioritised in districts where funding has been approved.
The council also noted that CCTV schemes could potentially receive funding through the Anti-Dumping Initiative, which is supported by the Circular Economy Fund. Applications for the initiative are expected to reopen in 2027.
Any future deployment of CCTV will be subject to the necessary statutory processes, including compliance with national guidelines and the code of practice governing the use of CCTV to prevent, detect and prosecute waste and litter offences.
Kildare County Council said proposals would be assessed on a site-by-site basis, taking proportionality, effectiveness and cost into account.
