Some instruments are valuable. Some are historic. And then some feel like they changed the temperature of culture itself.

Next month in New York, one of those instruments goes under the hammer.

The left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang that Kurt Cobain played in Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit video is set to headline a blockbuster Christie’s auction, with estimates suggesting it could sell for as much as $5 million. That’s not just a price tag. That’s a statement about legacy.

The guitar forms part of the vast collection once owned by the late Jim Irsay, former CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, whose trove of music, film, sports memorabilia and historic Americana is being described by Christie’s as one of the greatest ever assembled. More than 400 items are being sold across four auctions running from March 7 to 17, with public viewings at Christie’s New York between March 6 and 12.

Cobain’s Mustang won’t be alone. Also heading to new owners are guitars previously played by David Gilmour, including the legendary Black Strat used on every Pink Floyd album from Atom Heart Mother through The Final Cut, alongside instruments connected to John Lennon, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Prince. It’s less an auction and more a cultural time capsule.

Irsay’s family addressed the sale in October, explaining the emotional weight behind the decision. “This decision [to auction the collection] was not made lightly, but with deep reflection and love for the legacy he built,” they said. “Our dad was a passionate collector, driven not by possession, but by a profound appreciation for the beauty, history, and cultural resonance of the items he curated. From iconic instruments to handwritten lyrics by legends to rare historical artifacts and documents, each piece in the collection tells a story, and he was always so excited to share those stories with the world. Now, we believe it’s time for a new life for the collection, and it’s our sincerest hope that these artifacts find future stewards who understand and cherish their significance.”

A portion of proceeds will support philanthropic causes Irsay backed during his lifetime.

But let’s be honest: the Mustang is the centrepiece.

Filmed in Culver City in summer 1991, the Smells Like Teen Spirit video channelled the chaos of Rock And Roll High School and Over The Edge, transforming a grim pep rally into something mythic. Its premiere on MTV’s 120 Minutes on September 29, before landing in the network’s ‘Buzz Bin’ ignited a cultural wildfire.

As Dave Grohl reflected in 2009: “The video was probably the key element in that song becoming a hit. People heard the song on the radio and they thought, 'This is great', but when kids saw the video on MTV they thought, 'This is cool. These guys are kinda ugly and they're tearing up their f***ing high school'. And then with the video came more people and the clubs got bigger and bigger.”

That Mustang wasn’t just played.

It was part of the moment everything shifted.
