Maddox Jolie-Pitt has become the latest of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children to drop “Pitt” from his surname, marking another shift in how the family publicly identifies themselves.

The 24-year-old has filed legal documents requesting to formally change his name to remove his father’s surname, meaning he will now be known as Maddox Jolie.

The move reflects how he is already being credited professionally.

Maddox is listed under his mother’s surname on Angelina Jolie’s upcoming film Couture, where he worked as an assistant director.

He is the fourth of the couple’s six children to move away from the double-barrelled surname Jolie-Pitt.

His sisters Zahara and Vivienne have also publicly dropped “Pitt” in favour of Jolie, while Shiloh legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie in 2024.

The latest filing comes amid continued reporting around the family’s strained relationships with Brad Pitt. One report recently claimed he had no contact with Zahara and did not attend her graduation from Spelman College. A source quoted by Entertainment Tonight said it was “sad that someone would distract from this happy occasion by needlessly attacking a father who has been alienated from his family.”

The wider breakdown in relations stems from the aftermath of the couple’s split in 2016, when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce following an incident on a private flight that was later investigated by the FBI and social services.

Court filings relating to the incident included allegations that Pitt choked and struck one of the children and poured alcohol on the family. Pitt has denied the allegations, and authorities later declined to press charges.

The separation triggered an extended legal battle between the pair, including disputes over custody arrangements and their shared French vineyard, Château Miraval.

In 2022, Pitt sued Jolie after she sold her stake in the winery to a Russian businessman, alleging she had breached a verbal agreement. Jolie countersued, claiming Pitt had walked away from a planned purchase after she refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement linked to alleged abuse.

Over time, the couple’s separation has also been reflected in their children’s public identities, with several choosing to distance themselves from the Pitt surname entirely.

Despite the ongoing tensions, lawyers for Jolie have confirmed that the couple’s divorce has now been officially finalised, although certain legal disputes between them have continued.
