A man and a woman aged in their 70s were killed while two others were left seriously injured following a road collision in Co Louth.
This crash happened after two cars on the R173, The Bush at around 3.10pm yesterday.
The man and woman, both aged in their 70s were in one of the cars, and were pronounced dead at the scene. The second car saw the driver and passenger, a man and woman both aged in their 30s, airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
Gardaí have confirmed that the road has since reopened, having closed for technical examination.
Gardaí have called on witness or anyone who had been travelling on the R173 between Dundalk and Carlingford between 2.30pm and 3.30pm yesterday, or may have camera footage including dash-cam, are asked to get in touch with Dundalk Garda Station on 042 938 8400
In total, four people died on Irish roads yesterday, after a 24 year old woman from Tipperary died in a hit-and-run incident in Belfast, while a man in his 50s died in a single-vehicle crash in Tipperary.
This year, 100 people have been killed on Irish roads, compared with 90 for the same period in 2025.
As for Northern Ireland, 39 people have died on roads, compared with 27 for the same period last year.
