A judge has jailed a man for thirteen years for what he described as a “vicious and appalling” attack that led to the death of his then girlfriend’s unborn child.

Dean Paget, of no fixed abode, admitted trying to murder his ex on the 25th of April 2021.

In her victim impact statement, the woman told the judge that she was really looking forward to bringing her baby girl into the world.

She was 32-weeks pregnant when Dean Paget attacked her out of what the judge described today as a “misplaced jealousy.”

Several street cameras in the Dublin 2 area captured Paget kicking, punching and shoving his then girlfriend.

The couple were homeless at the time and she told the guards the attack continued back in their tent on Montague Lane. She described how he repeatedly kicked her in the stomach and threatened to kill both her, and her baby.

After presenting at the Rotunda Hospital later that day, she was told she had lost her child. She had named her Ruby Rose.

The judge described the “intentional ending of the life of a foetus” as the most serious aggravating factor.

Paget was handed a 14-year prison sentence with the final 12-months suspended.
