A man has been handed a life sentence for the murder of a postman in Co Cork.
This comes after Alex Deady, 21, from Convent Road in Doneraile, had been convicted for the murder of Barry Daly, a postman and father of five outside his home at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile last month.
The incident in the early hours of Sunday, 12 October last year.
Mr Deady, had been charged along with two teenage boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Both Deady and the older teenager, aged 17, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not to murder. The other teenager who is aged 16, pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter, which was accepted by the Department of Public Prosecutions.
Both teenagers will be sentenced on September 11.
In court, Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford had described the circumstances surrounding Barry Daly's death as brutal, and that while the action which caused his death was not prolonged, it was still a "brutal action".
She also acknowledged that even if he does not accept the verdict of murder, Mr Deady does accept that he caused Mr Daly's death, and faces this lengthy prison sentence.
He received the mandatory life sentence for murder, which was backdated to July 3, with Ms Justice Lankford saying that she would direct credit for any time the accused had previously spent in custody for the crime.
She went on to add that Mr Daly's death has had an impact on his local community and changed Doneraile forever.
Ms Justice Lankford stated that it was very clear from the victim impact statements that Mr Daly cared for the community and was a decent human being, who also cared for older people while working as a postman.
She stated that there were many examples where he showed kindness "over his short life". (All quotes according to RTÉ).
