Outrageous Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne didn’t just break the mould. He smashed it, buried the shards in the garden, and then probably forgot where he left them after a legendary bender. His career, equal parts musical genius and mind-melting chaos, was defined not just by the riffs or the records, but by the sheer audacity of his behaviour, both on and off the stage.

Some of it is horrifying. Some of it is so deranged it borders on fiction. All of it happened.

Take The Alamo, for instance. In 1982, Ozzy, for reasons that still defy logic, wandered drunkenly to a war memorial in Texas wearing one of wife Sharon’s dresses. He then proceeded to urinate on it. The Alamo. A literal shrine to the fallen. Predictably, this did not go down well. Ozzy was arrested and banned from San Antonio for a decade. He later donated thousands in an attempt to make amends. It remains one of the most tasteless rock anecdotes in existence.

And it somehow gets worse.

There’s the cat massacre story, a deeply disturbing account that even Ozzy himself later seemed haunted by. Allegedly, in a drug-fuelled episode, he slaughtered 17 cats with a shotgun. Sharon found him hiding under a piano, wielding both a knife and said shotgun. It’s not outrageous, it’s terrifying.

Then there’s the ant-snorting incident. Touring with Mötley Crüe in the ‘80s — a band not exactly known for moderation — Ozzy reportedly saw a line of ants and, mistaking them for party supplies or simply for the theatre of it all, snorted them through a straw. Nikki Sixx swore it happened. And frankly, if you know Ozzy, it probably did.

But of course, nothing will ever eclipse The Bat. Onstage in Des Moines in 1982, a fan threw what Ozzy assumed was a rubber prop. He bit into it. It wasn’t. “I immediately knew something was wrong,” he later said. He was rushed to hospital for rabies shots. The image haunts heavy metal history.

And finally, the Dove Incident. In 1981, at a meeting with CBS executives meant to be a peaceful publicity stunt, Ozzy brought live doves. He bit one’s head off. Blood everywhere. He was dragged out of the building. That wasn’t a stage show. That was a boardroom.

Ozzy Osbourne didn’t just flirt with madness. He married it, divorced it, and showed up drunk at its funeral.
