Peter Jackson has dismissed reports that he has retired from making films, despite not directing any cinema releases since 2014.

Despite being renowned for hits like the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, as well as King Kong, Jackson has not directed a feature film since The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies in 2014. In that time, the New Zealander has directed some documentaries, including They Shall Never Get Old in partnership with the BBC, as well as The Beatles - Get Back for Disney+ in 2021.

In 2023,  Jackson had also revealed that he had directed the music video for the final Beatles' track, 'Now And Then'.

The son was originally recorded in the 1970s by the late John Lennon, before being eventually completed by surviving members Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, along with the late George Harrison. More on this from Nova here.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Peter Jackson was asked if he had retired from the industry, given the last time he directed a feature film, as well as the non-cinematic context of this chat.

“No, no. I’m certainly not retired”, he replied. “We are currently working on three different screenplays. I’m at the moment writing three different scripts. We are producing and have been writing The Hunt for Gollum, which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year. I’ve enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I’ve grown old or not, and obviously the Get Back The Beatles project. I’ve enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that’ll probably carry on”.

Peter Jackson was speaking to Screen Rant to promote his collaboration with Colossal Biosciences, who are seeking to bring back the Giant Moa bird back from extinction.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum was originally fixed in 2023. It will also see Serkis who played Gollum in the original trilogy, returning to the role and also directing the film. It will arrive in 2027.
