Ricky Gervais has suggested that his upcoming sitcom Alley Cats could be his final television series, as the comedian increasingly turns his focus toward stand-up comedy.

The animated Netflix series, set for release in 2026, follows the global success of Gervais’ recent stand-up tour Mortality, which has earned him a Golden Globe nomination and is due to land on Netflix worldwide on December 30. The overwhelming reception to the tour appears to have cemented stand-up as his primary creative outlet.

Speaking on JaackMaate’s Happy Hour podcast, Gervais admitted he is unsure whether he will make another scripted TV project after Alley Cats.

“I don’t know. I’m really loving stand-up at the moment,” he said.

Reflecting on his career, Gervais explained that his creative identity has shifted significantly over time. He initially saw himself as a writer, director and actor, best known for creating landmark series such as The Office, Extras, Derek, and most recently After Life, which became one of Netflix’s most-watched UK comedies during its run.

“When I first started, I thought of myself as a writer, director and actor, in stuff I’d written and directed,” he said, noting that stand-up initially fit around his television work rather than leading it.

However, that balance has now flipped. “The last few years — maybe the last six, seven, eight years — it’s switched around. I feel that stand-up is my job. I feel that I’ve always got to be doing stand-up.”

Gervais pointed out that large television projects require years of commitment, explaining that Alley Cats will arrive three to four years after After Life ended in 2022. By contrast, stand-up allows him to respond more quickly to ideas and audiences.

Known for his blunt humour and controversial edge, Gervais has become one of the most commercially successful stand-up comics in the world, selling out arenas globally and regularly topping Netflix comedy charts with specials such as Humanity, SuperNature, and now Mortality.

Despite stepping back from television, he made clear he hasn’t ruled it out entirely. Gervais said he would only commit to another scripted project if it truly excites him, adding that he will now only agree to ideas that sound “amazing.”

If Alley Cats does mark his final sitcom, it would bring to a close a television career that reshaped modern comedy — while leaving Gervais firmly planted on stage, where he appears more comfortable than ever.
